UPDATED: ATI Drops Out Of Emmy Telecast!

LeBlancEmmy.jpg

Associated Television International (ATI), the production company which has put on the Daytime Emmy Awards broadcast since 2009, will not be helming the show this year. In a statement released on Twitter, president Jim Romanovich announced that the company has opted to step away from producing daytime's biggest night.

"Regretfully, we have today officially passed on doing The Daytime Emmys for television this year. As fans of the soaps in particular, as well as being daytime producers ourselves, we have immensely enjoyed being a part of your celebration these past three years. In 2009, there was not going to be a Daytime Emmys for television, as you know. It was over. we felt it was important for it to continue on television for as long as possible to give actors, producers, writers and so forth the night of recognition they so deserve. It wasn't always easy. In fact, it was quite challenging on many levels. Although it was never a money making project for us, it was prestigious, first and foremost, plus we wanted to do something important for the daytime community. I would like to think in some small way we have contributed in the interest of the daytime soap formula being created beyond television as we're now seeing through various online ventures, such as what Prospect Park had tried to do, and series currently thriving on the web."

For the full statement, including what the production company had planned to do with this year's ceremony, click here. Keep checking back as this story develops.

UPDATE: Bruce Rosenblum, Chairman of The National Academy Of Television Arts And Sciences posted a statement responding to the current situation on the Academy's Web site that should give fans some hope. "The Daytime Emmy Awards is a powerful brand," he writes. "We at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences are continuing to explore all broadcast possibilities including network, cable and digital media in order to produce a prestigious show that will satisfy the daytime community, fans and the worldwide viewing audiences."

Could Soaps Hit Hollywood?

GenJackPatty.jpg

There has been a lot of buzz about the demise of soap operas, but a new documentary just might bring the sad reality into the same world as Brad Pitt, Steven Spielberg and other big time Hollywood names! Called Soap Life, the docu-film is about the changes taking place in the world of daytime television, and with over 70 interviews featuring fans, stars, producers, directors, writers, bloggers and fan club leaders, it could show the world what's really happening in daytime.

"The wife of our executive producer, John Grossman, who owns the production company NYPS, is a big fan of GENERAL HOSPITAL, and her whole thing was, 'You have the ability, so let's do something to save the soaps,'" explains producer Matthew D'Amato of how it all began. "We started doing research, and we sat down with a few actors, producers and directors, and said, 'Is this is a good idea? Could this work? Should we pursue it?' And we looked it up online and didn't see anything like this, so we thought it would be important to get started."

And the main goal of the film, D'Amato explains, is to generate enough buzz about the possible end of soaps to possibly prevent it from happening. "Hopefully this will get enough attention to help the genre, because we don't want to see it fade away," he says, adding that it's tentatively scheduled for a June 2012 release date at film festivals and possibly on networks such as Showtime. "We do want to see it at festivals, and we do want to see it on networks [so] people who aren't soap fans can watch the film and kind of relate to it, hear the stories and maybe want to pick them up or maybe do something about the genre. We have contacts we can send it to in order to get it out there, so hopefully it will get bigger and bigger!"

B&B's Karen Returns... With A Daughter!

Johnson.jpg

Johanna Johnson (Karen) returns to THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL next month, and she's bringing her daughter with her! Remember that casting notice that we told you about a few weeks ago? It was for the role of Karen's daughter, Caroline Spencer, who is named for her late aunt. Daytime newcomer Linsey Godfrey is the lucky lady who has landed the plum role. Her previous credits include the Disney Channel shows WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE and SUITE LIFE ON DECK, as well as spots on CSI: MIAMI, ONE TREE HILL and the TV movie Jack's Family Adventure starring Jonathan Silvermann and Dedee Pfeiffer.

TV Guide broke the story that Karen and Caroline come to L.A. for a visit because the design student is hoping to land a job at Forrester Creations. Not only does Caroline land the job, but Stephanie invites Bill's niece to live in her guest house! And while the audience will just be meeting Caroline for the first time when she and her mom arrive on Tuesday, March 27, the B&B characters on-screen will be acting as if they already know her! Reportedly, the young lass is not a blood relation to any of the characters on the canvas, so Steffy and Hope better beware of the new girl in town!

Wagner Off Contract At B&B!

Wagner.jpg

In a not-so-surprising announcement, Jack Wagner's official Web site (www.wagnerworld.com) reports that the actor is out as THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL's Nick. The news comes on the heels of recent news that Lesley-Anne Down (Jackie), Brandon Beemer (Owen) and Zack Conroy (Oliver) have also been taken off contract. Wagner had just inked a new contract with the soap in September.

"We have just learned that Jack Wagner's option on his two year contract has not been picked up with The Bold and the Beautiful," says a post on the site. "We do not know if he will be leaving the show or staying on recurring basis, but with his lack of storyline in recent years, we highly doubt we will be seeing much more of Nick Marone. With Leslie-Anne [sic] Down's contract also not renewed and Brandon Beemer's move to recurring, it looks like the ship has sailed on the Morone clan.

Might his release from B&B open the door for Wagner to reclaim his role as GENERAL HOSPITAL's Frisco Jones, now that fellow 80s fan favorites Finola Hughes (Anna), Tristan Roberts (Robert) and Rick Springfield (Noah) are back on the GH sudser? "Head Writer Ron Carlivati is a longtime fan of GH. He has proven with his tenure at One Life to Live that he knows how to write for veteran characters," continues the post on Wagner's site. "Could it be time for Frisco Jones to come home to Port Charles as the show fights for its life? Get the letters and e-mails going. Let everyone know you want to see Jack Wagner back at GH!"

Except that there is no set, no script, and the actors have to make it up as they go along! "I've never done anything like it," McCook tells Soaps In Depth. "There's not a lot of rehearsal. I'm a little intimidated, but I've seen what they do on YouTube, and I think, 'Oh, I can do that.'"

Show time is 10:30 p.m. PT. Tickets to be in the studio audience at the ACME Comedy Theatre are available at www.HollywoodDreamRole.com. Or you can watch it all happen via a live video stream at www.acmecomedy.com!

LesleyAnneDown.jpg

Hot on the heels of last week's news that Brandon Beemer (Owen) and Zack Conroy (Oliver) have been bumped to recurring status at THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL comes word that Lesley-Anne Down (Jackie) was not offered a new deal with the soap!

"[Executive producer and headwriter] Bradley Bell has decided not to renew Lesley-Anne Down's contract on B&B," says the announcement posted this morning on the star's official Web site. "Lesley-Anne wants all of you to know how special and important you all are to her. Your continued effort and support of Lesley-Anne is so appreciated by her. When one door closes another one opens. This thankfully has been the case in this instance. We will let you know what it is when the time is right."

Two B&B Hunks Off Contract!

BeemerConroy.jpg

Although Owen returns to THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL this week to tell Jackie that he wants her back, Jowen fans shouldn't hold out hope for a happy reunion for the couple: Soaps In Depth has learned that the hunk's portrayer, Brandon Beemer, has been taken off contract. Nevertheless, Jackie, Owen and even his babymama, Bridget (played by Ashley Jones) will factor in to a February Sweeps storyline next month.

Beemer isn't the only B&B guy who will be seeing less screen time: Zack Conroy (Oliver) has been taken off contract as well. A rep for the soap says that while both actors have been dropped down to recurring status, they are still a part of the B&B family... which means that they will continue to drop by on-screen from time to time!

"Hillary is a formidable actress with a powerful screen presence," said executive producer/headwriter Bradley Bell. Smith starts taping in late January, which means she'll likely turn up on screen in early March. The actress called OLTL home for the past two decades, but CBS soaps fans will also remember her five-year stint as Margo Hughes on AS THE WORLD TURNS in the 1980s.

B&B Makes A Crossover DEAL!

WagnerDEAL.jpg

We've seen THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL's Pam do a lot of whacky things, but this time, she's dragging Nick into her zany shenanigans: She convinces him to join her as a contestant on CBS' iconic game show, LET'S MAKE A DEAL! The pair, played by Jack Wagner and Alley Mills, don hilarious getups and join host Wayne Brady for a special B&B episode airing Wednesday, January 18. But wait: There's more! Tune in to DEAL on Friday, January 20 to catch Wagner appear as himself on the legendary game show! "It was a great gift for us," says Brady of having Wagner appear as part of a prize for that day's show. "And a nice thing for B&B as well, to have both shows do this type of crossover."

And as for Wagner's skills in front of a live audience? Brady says he's the best. "Jack was great," he enthuses. "The man is a stage vet, so there's never any worry about him. He went out and did it like a pro."

This wasn't Brady's first time at the soap opera rodeo: In addition to hosting the 2011 Daytime Emmy Awards last June, Brady and his grandmother, Valerie (who raised him), appeared on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS in 2004 in a special Mother's Day episode. LET'S MAKE A DEAL model Tiffany Coyne and announcer Jonathan Magnum will also appear in the B&B episode. How did this all come about? "I was watching a hockey game and saw that the Kings had a female host, Heidi Androl," Melchior shares of the Fox Sports West reporter. "She brings such a neat quality to the broadcast, but then I realized the Anaheim Ducks didn't have a girl. So I approached them about it and Tom Feuer, the executive producer [of Fox Sports West and Prime Ticket], is giving me this shot tonight. I'm an unconventional hire and I'm thrilled!"

The Kings and Ducks face off tonight, live at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT on Fox Sports West and Prime Ticket. Check your local listings for the exact channel from your cable provider.

B&B's deVry Goes Rogue!

devry.jpg

THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL's William deVry (ex-Storm) is literally back in action this week as his storyline kicks off on the CW's NIKITA. Speaking to Soaps In Depth from the set using his best Irish accent, deVry provided the deets about his new villainous character, Patrick Miller. "I'm playing a guardian. He's the keeper of secrets and a very important pawn in the game of espionage," the actor confides.

In the recurring role -- "It looks like I'm doing six episodes and counting," he shares -- deVry will have the opportunity to strut his stuff like never before. "I was introduced in the last episode, but the story really starts this Friday with a big reveal. And a lot of action right away," he says of the mid-season finale airing this Friday, December 2, at 8 p.m. EST "I'm doing all my own stunts, running, knife fights, gun shooting, and blowing 'em up!" NIKITA will return to the CW on Friday, January 6.

In the meantime, deVry is also currently starring as the head of an inept government spy agency in the Canadian sit-com INSECURITY. The primetime series is now in its second season, but fans can catch up with the 2-DVD set. When he wraps his current projects, the actor is headed to HBO's THE TRANSPORTER where he's been tapped for yet another intriguing role. "It's a corrupt CIA agent," deVry laughs. "I've been going from playing a smart ass to a bad ass."

B&B Honors Our Nation's Vets!

Kristolyn.jpg

THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL's Dayzee may focus most of her attention on the homeless community, but in a very special episode airing Friday, November 11, she's opening her heart to the United States Armed Forces! The philanthropic restaurateur will be hosting a luncheon at Dayzee's Cafe along with Oliver, Hope, Marcus and Thomas -- and the soap cast 20 real-life war heroes to take part in the special Veterans Day show! Men and women from all branches of the United States Armed Forces and from wars spanning from "The Battle of the Bulge" of World War II to the current war in Afghanistan will appear.

Stacey Durkett, a former member of the Military Police, is one of the vets featured, and she says it was an honor to be included. "We would not have this country, and it would not be the way that it is if we did not have veterans to fight for us and to support for us," she tells Soaps In Depth of the importance of bringing awareness to viewers about what she and her fellow vets have done for the nation. "I'm all for peace as well, but I still do think you need the security of somebody protecting your country. And if I had to do it again, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. It makes me very proud."

As an added something special for the episode, country singer Beau Davidson makes a return appearance to the soap, and will serenade the men and women with new single, "Blessed." "We're right at the anniversary of 9/11, so it kind of came out of that," the musician says about the inspiration for the song. "I have to give [B&B headwriter and executive producer] Brad Bell a lot of credit for incorporating someone like me to premiere things like this."
