Could This Sitcom Dad Be Pam’s Mr. Right?

Dick Christie, best known for playing engineer/inventor Ted Lawson on the eighties-era sitcom SMALL WONDER debuts on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL on Wednesday, October 16 as Charlie Webber, a security guard entrusted with protecting the second Hope Diamond when it goes on display in their Beverly Hills boutique!

“He’s got a quirky personality,” says Christie of his B&B alter ego, whom he likens to know-it-all mailman Cliff Clavin from CHEERS. “He’s a blowhard who considers himself to be very cool. He has instant recall of any diamond heist in the last hundred years and will detail it, chapter and verse, whether you want to hear about it or not.”

Christie, a long-time acquaintance of B&B executive producer and headwriter Bradley Bell, says the scribe approached him to play the comic role for this short-term story arc. “He said, ‘I want to give you the flexibility to use your improv skills with this character. Anything you want to bring to it, go ahead.’ I said, ‘Really? Are you crazy? Okay!'” says Christie.

And though Charlie considers himself a consummate professional, one person will manage to throw him off his game: Pam! “They have an eye for each other,” says Christie. “I think a romance between Pam and Charlie would be a great thing.”

As for the campy eighties sitcom about a robotic daughter that brought Christie his biggest claim to fame, he looks back fondly on the show. “I had so much fun doing it. By today’s standards, it probably wasn’t very good, but it was good enough to connect with the audience for which it was intended, which was seven-to-thirteen-year-olds. They loved it!”
