AS THE WORLD TURNS:
Do you want Simon to return to Oakdale to help Katie?
Simon? Who's Simon? At least, that's how I feel about him now.
Yes, of course! And the sooner, the better.

  Beth Ehlers
What A Character

Beth Ehlers works hard to keep herself separated from Harley

For many actors who play the same role over an extended period of time, the fine distinction between reality and fantasy often blurs, as their alter egos become somewhat an extension of themselves. But for GUIDING LIGHT’s Beth Ehlers, the fact that she’s spent nearly twelve years of her life playing Harley Cooper has only made her more determined to keep that line clearly separated. "I don’t think it’s fun to play somebody who is like you," says the actress with a shrug. "I mean, what’s the challenge in that?"

As Different As Night And Day
With years of experience under her belt, Ehlers has learned that it takes conscious decisions in keeping Beth as unlike Harley as possible. "You work hard, make every day important… don’t phone it in," she reveals. "Approach every script like it’s important. With every scene, pull from your bag and remember your history.‘ Where am I now? Why is this impacting me?’ You’ve got to keep it fresh and strong every day."
Otherwise, Ehlers believes, you get lazy. And when an actor gets lazy, their work suffers for it. "You’ve got to show up on time, you’ve got to know your lines," she points out. "Make it all important, and make it all real."
"I don’t know that I bring a lot of myself to her," concludes Ehlers. "No, I try not to sound like me. I fight not to be like me. I want Harley to keep her own voice. And by keeping her separate, I think I have more objectivity." Michelle Ann Moro
