AS THE WORLD TURNS:
Do you want Simon to return to Oakdale to help Katie?
Simon? Who's Simon? At least, that's how I feel about him now.
Yes, of course! And the sooner, the better.

A Song In His Heart

Jerry Douglas (John) looks toward the future

Now that his character, John Abbott, has had the plug pulled on him — literally — Jerry Douglas is making the rounds insisting that this may not be his swan song after all. In fact, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS has already admitted they’re bringing back the patriarch for what might be called some “spiritual” guidance, where he provides a moral compass for his increasingly devious son Jack.

Father Knows Best
“I think [headwriter Lynn Marie Latham] is going to write [John] for a while,” predicts the showbiz vet. “I told her that I would do one [episode] a week, that’s plenty. But I really am very delighted by this whole new storyline. I think it’s very inventive, very creative writing, and it’s a really interesting thing to do for the show. It’s sort of bringing [Showtime’s critically acclaimed] SIX FEET UNDER edge to the show, which has never been done before. I really think it gives the show an edge, which is needed.”

Making Music
While Douglas is more than happy to continue in his role as ghost dad, he’s also moving forward with a project that he’s been involved in for almost a year. “I recorded a CD, which we just finished in June,” he shares. “My partner is John Pratt, who is an independent music producer. He heard something of mine that I had done years ago… I had done a New Year’s Eve party live, where I sang these great old songs, and we recorded it. He heard it and said he wanted to do a CD with me and a full orchestra, the full treatment.”

The result is Songs For Nighttime Lovers, a collection of standards like Funny Valentine, The Best Is Yet To Come, Fever. “They’re beautiful old romantic songs that takes an old guy to sing,” he chuckles. “I used to go to casinos and sing them, and we always had fun doing those shows. But I think younger generations would get a kick out of it. The CD came out ten times better than I thought!”

Douglas will be launching his own website around September 10-15, where fans can purchase the CD. The site is called Jerrydouglasmusic.com — not his original choice, he confesses. “I wanted it to just be my name, but did you know that there is a country western guitarist named Jerry Douglas? The SOB took all the damn websites!” he laughs, adding jokingly, “But I fixed him. Just make sure you add ‘music’ to my name and you’ll get my website rather than that imposter!”—Julie McElwain
