THE LATE LATE SHOW Does Daytime!

LateLateShowYRSpoof.jpg

If you ever wanted to see CSI: CYBER's Patricia Arquette and Star Trek's Chris Pine on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS, this is about as close as you are going to get! The actors were last night's guests on THE LATE LATE SHOW with James Corden and hysterically acted out a scene from the CBS soap with the host.

In setting up the sketch, Corden explained that his studio is in the same building as the iconic soap -- and they even share a printer, where one of his writers' assistants found a Y&R script left behind. Watch the video below, and then let us know in the comments if you think their performance is worthy of a Daytime Emmy Award!

ATWT Alum Engaged!

Vanessa_Ray14196.jpg

Congratulations are in order for Vanessa Ray, who currently stars on CBS's primetime drama BLUE BLOODS, but soap fans will remember as AS THE WORLD TURNS' Teri — she recently became engaged to boyfriend Landon Beard!

According to Hello Magazine, Beard proposed to the actress at one of their favorite spots in New York City, Pier 84 on the Hudson River, despite the frigid East Coast temperatures. And photos of the actual proposal were taken by a conveniently-placed tourist who was revealed to be Ray's good friend Kelly Sullivan (Sage, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS)! "Totally unbeknownst to me, he had Kelly fly out from L.A.," she confided to the magazine. "She was disguised in a black wig pretending to be a tourist taking pictures during the whole thing."

Best wishes to the happy couple for a lifetime together!

UPDATE: Rowell's Lawyer Responds To CBS Claim

Rowell.jpg

One of the attorneys representing former THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS star Victoria Rowell (ex-Drucilla) in her lawsuit against CBS and Sony argues that the corporations' claims that the actress' case is unconstitutional is... well, false.

"CBS and Sony's position is no surprise, but it's certainly misguided," says Dan Stormer of Hadsell & Stormer, co-counsel for Rowell. "Nothing in the Constitution exempts Hollywood from adhering to this country's laws prohibiting retaliation against employees who oppose racial discrimination. The core of this case is Ms. Rowell's free speech -- her right to speak out about the lack of diversity at her workplace without reprisal."

Tell us in the comments below, whose side are you on?

B&B's Karen "Steals" Brooke's Dad!

DuffyFosters.jpg

Brooke has, ahem, shall we say, "stolen" many men on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL over the years. Well, now, turnabout is fair play! THE FOSTERS executive producer Joanna Johnson, who recurs as Karen on the CBS sudser, has snagged Patrick Duffy (ex-Stephen) to play Robert Quinn, Sr., the father of Callie's biological pop, Robert (played by Kerr Smith, Ryder, AS THE WORLD TURNS) in the drama's season finale.

"I was mesmerized by Patrick's work on B&B," FOSTERS executive producer Johnson tells Soaps In Depth. "He gave this beautiful speech to Katie and did it in one take. He was so good I forgot I was in the scene! When this part came up, I wrote him an E-mail and begged him to come on to the show."

Watch for Robert and Callie to see each other in a new light after Robert's dad visits. "We've alluded to the dynamic that Robert's father had something to do with him leaving Callie's mother," Johnson says. Might the former DALLAS star return for more shows when THE FOSTERS returns for its third season? "We definitely want to bring him back," the exec adds.

The episode in which Duffy appears is titled "The End Of The Beginning," and was written by Johnson and fellow executive producers Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige. It airs tonight, March 23, at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC Family.

CBS And Sony Argue Rowell's Suit Uconstitutional

Victoria_Rowell02318.jpg

The lawsuit between Victoria Rowell (ex-Drucilla, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS) and CBS and Sony Pictures Television as taken another twist. The Wrap is reporting that the defendants have filed a motion in U.S. district court in New York to have the actress' lawsuit dismissed.

In a memo, attorneys for CBS and Sony claim Rowell's suit is "a blatant attempt by Plaintiff to force her way back onto a daytime television soap opera, after she voluntarily resigned from her role in 2007."

The memo also argues that casting and script decisions are protected free speech and ordering CBS and Sony to make those choices for Rowell's benefit would go against the First Amendment.

In addition to asking for the case to be dismissed, attorneys for CBS and Sony are requesting the venue be changed to California, where Y&R tapes. As this ongoing real-life soap opera continues, we'll keep bringing you updates as we get them!

Maya's Secret Stuns Soap Fans!

MayaEp.jpg

THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL broke unexpected ground at the end of today's episode when Nicole purported that her sister Maya was born Myron — in other words, that she was her brother! While it was not entirely clear from the cliffhanger's final tag (and the look on Maya's face) whether Nicole had her facts correct, subsequent mainstream media stories have confirmed that B&B is embarking on a soap first by featuring a transgender character as part of its regular cast (though it's not the first to feature a transgender person — ABC's THE CITY once featured a transgender fashion model named Azure and ALL MY CHILDREN introduced a glam rocker named Zarf who identified as a woman.)

One source tells Soaps In Depth that B&B has been working closely in conjunction with GLAAD, the leading advocate for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, to make sure they tell this upcoming storyline with accuracy and sensitivity. The source also says Karla Mosley (Maya) is absolutely thrilled with the story twist. "Totally not supposed to be tweeting," Mosley posted to her Twitter page following Wednesday's East Coast airing, "but thanks for all the LOVE. So much more to come."

"It is about people respecting other people's differences and their uniqueness," said executive producer and headwriter Bradley Bell in a statement published on USAToday.com. "In the end, we all want to be loved, and in order to love someone else you first have to love yourself. If you are transgender, gay, straight, it doesn't matter. It's about finding love in life. This is a love story."

B&B had been keeping details of this storyline under tighter security than Fort Knox in recent weeks, but following the airing of Wednesday's episodes the Twitterverse exploded with responses that ran the gamut from stunned and excited by the unexpected reveal to bewildered, particularly by the fact that Maya claimed to have had a baby that died after she gave it up. That question, and many more, will presumably be answered in the days and weeks to come!

Share your own reactions to this surprising twist in the comments!

BettyROCKERS.jpg

We still don't even know the final nominees for the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards (those will be announced on Thursday, March 26), but The National Academy of Television Arts And Sciences has revealed one of the trophies will be given to Betty White (ex-Ann, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL), who will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award!

"Betty White is an American institution," says Bob Mauro, president of NATAS. She is one of the most beloved female performers in the history of television and the National Academy is proud to be honoring her with a most well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award."

Inside EMPIRE's Finale!

EmpireGallery.jpg

FOX's hit nighttime soap, EMPIRE, will air its season one finale in a special two-hour denouement titled "Die But Once/Who I Am" on Wednesday, March 18, at 8:00 p.m. ET. In the explosive last pair of episodes, Jamal and Lucious are on their way to forming a music-centered relationship, but once again, Lucious has a secret that's about to change everything! Meanwhile, Hakeem decides to flirt with the enemy while trying to figure out what the best move for his career is. Additionally, Cookie — not surprisingly &#!51; is "cooking" up a plan of her own!

"It's a very explosive finale," series executive producer/co-creator Danny Strong tells Soaps In Depth. "Not surprisingly, given the nature of our storytelling, many things will go down and be resolved. Alliances will shift and yet it may or may not be completely resolved by the time it's over."

Strong promises he won't "Laura Palmer" the fans of EMPIRE referring to the season one finale of TWIN PEAKS (in which viewers were still left wondering who offed Laura). In other words, Lucious will likely reveal to which son he'll be turning over his music business. "A lot will be resolved," Strong previews.

Was there much pressure to make the finale jam-packed so that folks will keep talking about the series until it returns for season two? "Some people [may have] felt pressure, but I didn't," Strong says. "I never think that coming up with story that will try to outdo something is the way to come up with a good story. It needs to come from characters, conflict and fundamentals of what makes a good story."

Strong adds that he and his team asked themselves: "How can we conclude the season in a way that we've set up and play in a way that's exciting, powerful and fun, but also keeps the door open for a place to go to in season two? It was tough! Ilene [Chaiken, executive producer] and I wrote the final episode together. But there were a lot of re-writes."

According to Strong, the network and studio "pounded" the EMPIRE writers with notes — in a good way! "The notes made it better," he allows. "They were really good. I think we really pulled it off." Of the finale, he predicts: "People are going to dig it!"

For more on what made EMPIRE the breakout hit of this television season, don't miss our feature in the new issue of CBS Soaps In Depth, still on sale!

Long Live The QUEENS OF DRAMA!

QueensOfDrama.jpg

The new reality series QUEENS OF DRAMA, set to debut on Pop starting Sunday, April 26, at 10:00 p.m. EST (right after The Daytime Emmys!), features a bevy of leading ladies from the world of soaps. Donna Mills (Madeline, GENERAL HOSPITAL; Abby, KNOTS LANDING) headlines the cast, which includes Hunter Tylo (ex-Taylor, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL), Crystal Hunt (Lizzie, GUIDING LIGHT; Stacy, ONE LIFE TO LIVE), Vanessa Marcil (ex-Brenda, GH), and two former PASSIONS stars: Lindsay Hartley (Theresa) and Chrystee Pharris (Simone).

The series features the actresses as they try to form a team that will create and star in its own nighttime series. "We're all strong," Mills tells Soaps In Depth. "The [other women on the show] have been terrific with me, but they're strong. They have their ideas, which is good and it made the show really come alive. You see what they want, what gets in the way of that and how they end up getting what they want."

As KNOTS fans recall, Mills' Abby was a savvy businesswoman who most always got the last laugh. Will we see her express certain "Abby-isms" throughout the show? "It's me, not Abby," clarifies, Mills, then hastens to adds, "There will be more 'Donna-isms.'"

After its premiere, QUEENS OF DRAMA will settle into its regular time slot on Wednesday, April 29 at 8:00 p.m. EST on Pop for its 10 episode run. Check out the following clip below to get a taste of what the show has to offer — and be sure not to miss the appearance of guest Joan Collins (Alexis, DYNASTY; Alexandra, GL)!

GL's Zimmer Is Still Wicked!

ZimmerWicked.jpg

Los Angeles area fans of Kim Zimmer (Reva, GUIDING LIGHT) have until this Sunday, March 15, to see the actress in the musical Wicked, playing at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood! The four-time Emmy winner plays Madame Morrible in the popular, long-running musical that looks at life in the Land of Oz prior to Dorothy's arrival.

"Each performance is naturally fresh," Zimmer tells Soaps In Depth, "because we have other actors come in and take over when someone has a day off. Things happen all the time that keeps each show different." And what happens if she ever temporarily forgets a line? "I'll ad lib until something sounds familiar," she chuckles. "The kids in the show will look me and say, 'How did you do that?' There are only two spots I'm notorious about forgetting, but I've gotten to the point where I get through them."

Dorothy's journey to Oz was a surreal fantasy, part dream/part nightmare — and believe her, Zimmer can relate! "I had the actor's ultimate nightmare — being lost in the bowels of the theater and not being able to find my costume," Zimmer recounts of what happened one night when the show was playing in San Diego. "My dressing room was quite a walk from where I made my entrance." The actress, who was already fitted with a microphone, kept yelling out "Coming! I'm coming!" as she made her way to the stage while simultaneously getting (mostly) dressed. "I made it on stage, but my dress was wide open in the back. Another character was trying to help zip me up!"

The good news, Zimmer adds, is that ever since she went through that mini-ordeal, "I haven't had that nightmare since!"

Is It The End For Y&R's Michael?

LeBlanc8.jpg

Fans took to the Internet months ago to share their fear that THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS' Christian Jules LeBlanc might soon be leaving the show after his alter ego, Michael, was diagnosed with cancer.

"That had a lot to do with the show losing Billy [Miller, ex-Billy] and Michelle [Stafford, ex-Phyllis]," says the Emmy winner. "I went up to [executive producer] Jill [Farren Phelps] and said, 'Oh, you're gonna get hell for this! But that's the nature of social media. It morphed into where [former Y&R hairstylist] George Guzman, a good friend of mine, walked in and said, 'Do you know what they're saying now? That I'm quitting the show because you've been fired!'"

While that's not true, what is true? Soaps In Depth talked to LeBlanc about dealing with such a challenging storyline so near when he lost his own father to cancer. Pick up the magazine for the interview!

Is Y&R's Austin Dead Or Not?

MatthewAtkinsonGal.jpg

For a dead guy, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS' Austin sure seems to be getting around! Which always begs the question: Is the hunk really dead? Or, given the many lookalikes and twins (Caleb/Cane, Mariah/Cassie, Jeffrey/William) that have sauntered through Genoa City, could fans soon be getting a double dose of Austin with a doppleganger?

"I don't know what's going to happen," admits his portrayer, Matthew Atkinson. "From Day One, Austin has been a very mysterious character, and we haven't figured out much about him. There's a lot of questions we could ask, but no answers just yet! I can't give anything specifically away, I would say you will learn a lot about Austin in the coming weeks."

Right now, viewers are learning a lot in flashbacks, including the stunning revelation that Austin and Abby were having a hot and heavy affair! "When I first came on the show, Melissa [Ordway, Abby] and I talked about how her character is related to everyone, so we thought at some point we were going to have a relationship!" laughs the actor. "I guess that kind of ended up happening! I enjoy working with her; she's such a sweetheart!

"Keep watching," Atkinson adds with a grin. "This is not a predictable storyline at all!"

B&B Alum Joins Web Soap WINTERTHORNE!

LindaGray.jpg

How do you make a series centered on a candy empire even tastier? By adding DALLAS star Linda Gray (ex-Priscilla, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL) to the mix!

When WINTERTHORNE, the new Web series from DEVANITY creator Michael Caruso, begins production next month, Gray -- best known as DALLAS' liquor-lovin' Sue Ellen Ewing -- will step into the role of matriarch Joanna Winterthorne.

"Linda has a warmth and strength that embodies Joanna," says Caruso, adding that he "wrote this part specifically for her. It's always an honor when you write for a specific actor and they see themselves in the part. This is a moment I will never forget as a producer!"

Martha Madison (ex-Belle, DAYS OF OUR LIVES), who'll play Joanna's daughter, Miranda, admits to being excited about working with the iconic star. "I have so many special memories of watching DALLAS with my own mother," Madison says, "so having Linda play my mother now feels like a full-circle moment!"

WINTERTHORNE promises to flip traditional serialized storytelling on its head by focusing on a female-centric empire in which the men play supporting roles. As well as the aforementioned cast, the sudser also features Gordon Thompson (DYNASTY) and Josh Thrower (90210), with more casting expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Victoria Rowell Speaks Out!

Rowell.jpg

Soaps In Depth was present this morning when former THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS star Victoria Rowell (ex-Drucilla) held a press conference in New York City to discuss her lawsuit against CBS and Sony.

"This is a profound moment for me," the actress shared, "as an African-American woman who wishes to continue to live the American dream. I've always advocated for myself, and was taught to do so after 18 years in foster care. And I advocate for others, and was taught to do so. So this is not about me. This is about myself and the many, many other African-Americans who have been denied the right to perform in front of and behind the camera. Specifically on Y&R."

In her suit, Rowell claims that CBS and Sony have refused to rehire her in retaliation for her being outspoken about the lack of diversity in the daytime community, and particularly on her former show, the top-rated daytime drama. "It is an incestuous industry, and it has retaliated against me," the actress told In Depth at this morning's conference.

We will have more on Rowell's case in an upcoming issue. In the meantime, we want to hear your thoughts on her claim, so please comment below!

Y&R Star Sues CBS And Sony!

Victoria_Rowell02318.jpg

The daytime drama at THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS isn't just in front of the cameras, it's also behind the scenes! According to Daytime Confidential, Victoria Rowell (ex-Dru) is suing both CBS and Sony! The suit alleges that she was not rehired at Y&R in retaliation for her public and private complaints regarding the lack of diversity at Y&R both in front of and behind the camera.

Rowell claims that she reluctantly exited the soap in 2007 after years of racial discrimination described in the complaint. She also claims that since 2010, she has tried to return to Y&R or sister soap THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL but been denied. We will continue following this story and bring you any updates, but in the meantime, sound off with your own views on this lawsuit in the comments!

UPDATE: A CBS spokesperson tells Soaps In Depth: "We were disappointed to learn that, after leaving the cast of "The Young and the Restless" on her own initiative, Ms. Rowell has attempted to rewrite that history through lawyers' letters and a lawsuit that has no merit. We harbor no ill will toward Ms. Rowell, but we will vigorously defend this case."

Ridge & Brooke: Is It Really Over?

RidgeBrooke.jpg

Nobody can say that THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL's Brooke didn't try her best! Donning a barely-there outfit, she tried luring Ridge down to the pool for a little fun and, when he nixed that idea, made it clear that she wanted him back! Ridge, however, made it clear he had feelings for Caroline. Skeptical, Brooke insisted that to her, "this looks like a midlife crisis!" Ridge, however, placed Brooke firmly in the friend zone before dashing off to meet Caroline and reaffirming his commitment to her.

But is this really the end for Brooke and Ridge, or were Donna and Pam right to warn Caroline that the much-married duo always wind up reuniting? Should Brooke fight for Ridge, try and steal Bill away from Katie, find a new man... or maybe try flying solo for a while?

Y&R' Collins Is Cooking!

CollinsHomeFamily.jpg

Jessica Collins (Avery, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS) drops by the Hallmark Channel's HOME & FAMILY show today to chat with hosts Cristina Ferrare and Mark Steines about Avery's upcoming storyline and do a cooking segment featuring her famous Crème Brûlée French Toast!

"I love 'make ahead' dishes, which this is," Collins tells Soaps In Depth. "This is one of the easiest things to make because if you can mix things in a bowl you can make it. It's something my mother and aunt would make. It's great for kids because you can make it the night before.

"It's a hobby that turned into a passion that kind of turned into a second career for me," adds Collins, who graduated from the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu cooking school in 2009 and has a Web site dedicated to her culinary creations. "My blog (JessicaCollins.com) is all about making cooking accessible. It's for first-time cooks — beginners, college kids. I sometimes cook a lot fancier in my real-life, but I also use those recipes, too. I don't have a lot of time to plan and make something amazing. My blog is built much more for my lifestyle — I'll come home, put a chicken in the oven, take a bath while it's cooking and then getting out, eating my chicken and watching Y&R with a glass of wine!"

HOME & FAMILY airs on the Hallmark Channel at 10:00 a.m. ET/PT and 9:00 a.m. Central Time. Check out the recipe for Collins' French toast — and many other tasty dishes — at JessicaCollins.com.

Y&R's Hartley Moonlights With MISTRESSES!

Justin_Hartley28953.jpg

If you're enjoying Justin Hartley as Adam on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS, you'll be able to see even more of him when he returns for the season premiere of MISTRESSES, where he plays the recurring role of Scott.

Hartley will appear in the season premiere, which will resolve last season's cliffhanger where Joss left Scott at the altar, and is scheduled to appear in at least one additional show during the 13-episode season. The ABC primetime sudser is set to return this summer, and we'll let you know an airdate as soon as we know one.

A rep for Y&R assures fans that this moonlighting will not affect Hartley's screentime as Adam, so have no fear — the actor's not going anywhere!
