Supergirl Lands In Genoa City!

Helen_Slater15074.jpg

Helen Slater debuts as Dr. Chiverton, Victoria's OB/GYN, on the Friday, May 2 episode of THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS. "I've been interested in doing daytime for a while," the actress tells Soaps In Depth. "It's a medium I haven't done before, and this just seemed like a perfect way to enter it."

The actress — who made her 1984 film debut as the title character in Supergirl — believes that the stigmas of film thespians doing daytime aren't as severe as they once might have been. "There will always be some people who draw more strict lines in the sand, but this has been such a fun, interesting journey," she says of her Y&R experience.

How is Slater, who has a theater and improv background, finding the pace of daytime? "I could not believe it," she says of how quickly scenes are taped. "My mouth dropped open! They were very sweet from the control booth [when I had to do a second take]. I think this is my first doctor role. I have an examination room and clipboard and I'm saying things like 'fetal cell analysis.' It's like learning a new language!"

When Slater's not busy acting, she's staying creative in other ways. She wrote the music for a CD she produced titled Myths Of Ancient Greece — Songs And Stories For Kids Of All Ages! "I've been a huge lover of Greek mythology ever since I read The Odyssey," Slater adds. "I feel like giving back, because some of these myths may get lost and I feel that they are important!"

Bob Barker "Comes On Down" To B&B!

BobBarkerScottClifton.jpg

TV icon and game show legend Bob Barker will appear on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL on Wednesday, April 30, and Thursday, May 1, as part of several documentary-style episodes tackling the issue of animal welfare.

Though it's not his first cameo on B&B — he briefly appeared on the show for a fashion storyline back in 2002 — Barker says he's thrilled to return this time to espouse a cause so close to his heart. "I do an interview [with Liam, for Spencer Publications] about the problem of overpopulation of animals," he says. "That interview is completely ad-libbed."

The former emcee says he's thrilled that his message about the importance of spaying and neutering pets will reach B&B's immense global audience. "This is going to be helpful to countless animals," he says. "We've got to get the word out, and then it'll change."

Barker's message of adopting pets from shelters (rather than acquiring them from breeders) struck such a chord on set that three B&B employees — including Scott Clifton (Liam) and the show's supervising producer, Ed Scott — adopted pets from the South Los Angeles Animal Shelter where the show filmed part of this storyline. That, says Barker, was the real icing on the cake. "Oh I was so pleased about that."

Would the nonagenarian be willing to come back for another appearance on the soap? Without a doubt. "I'll come back anytime they want," he says. "If all I have to do as an actor is talk about spaying and neutering, I'm their man!"

B&B Exec Leads Important Crusade

MelodyEdScott.jpg

When he's not overseeing the production of THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL for his day job, supervising producer Ed Scott is trying to save the world — literally. The TV exec and husband of Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS) is the CEO of the Save The Earth Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to helping raise both awareness and funding for environmental research in collaboration with major universities.

The organization has planned several exciting events for Earth Week this week. On Tuesday, April 22, Chicago's No. 1 rock station, The Drive 97.1 will auction off a Candy Apple Red Fender Standard Stratocaster signed by Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler. For more information check out the STE auction site. The foundation is also sponsoring a major symposium on Saturday, April 26th featuring the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the focus of which will be the problem of marine debris.

"There are three huge garbage patches in our oceans right now, one of which is in the North Pacific and covers an area the size of Texas," Scott explains. "The fish eat the plastic, and god only knows what it does to us when it gets into our system. The other major problem is container ships dropping big containers. Every year hundreds fall off of ships in rough seas, and they're really fouling up the water."

Scott points to a new book called Emotion For The Ocean by Chet Forrest, which explains, in layman's terms, the devastation being done to our oceans and marine life. "The oceans are our lifeblood," says Scott. "I don't think enough people understand the severity of what is happening, but we have to get it resolved. We can't keep destroying the oceans like we're doing."

Gaskill Takes On The Bard!

BrianGaskill-192.jpg

From the "Just when I thought I'd heard everything" files has come STRIPPING SHAKESPEARE, a provocative new Web series from the We Make Movies filmmakers collective in Los Angeles. In each episode, famous scenes from The Bard's works are set in a scintillating new context, replete with professional pole dancers and burlesque performers. Who knew Shakespeare could be so sexy? Daytime TV veteran Brian Gaskill (Dylan, GUIDING LIGHT; ex-Ozzie, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL; Bobby, ALL MY CHIlDREN; Rafe, PORT CHARLES), who is a member of the collective, appears in the episode airing this Sunday, April 13.

"My friend, Nicol Razon, produced it," Gaskill shares. "The series is about her taking her love of Shakespeare and putting it into a format that is maybe gonna raise some eyebrows, but it's also gonna promote conversation and get people to pay attention to what the filmmaker is doing to be creative."

This Sunday's episode is based on The Taming Of The Shrew with Gaskill reciting the lines of Petruchio opposite Razon as Kate. But don't look for the traditional, 16th century costuming and staging. Rather, it plays out in a much more imaginative way. "It's more like artistic music videos of Shakespeare," offers Gaskill, who first began performing the great poet's work back in high school. To experience it for yourself, visit Strippingshakespeare.com or the We Make Movies YouTube channel here.

Stars Added To THE BAY!

MossKanan.jpg

Two hunks from THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL — one past, one future — have joined the cast of the Emmy-nominated Web soap THE BAY! Ronn Moss (ex-Ridge) is set to play John Blackwell, the former district attorney of Bay City, while Sean Kanan (who returns to B&B as Deacon in June), has joined the Internet serial as press secretary Kenneth Allen. That role previously played by Brody Hutzler (ex-Patrick, DAYS OF OUR LIVES; ex-Cody, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS).

Why the change with Kanan taking over for Hutzler? "Brody is a good friend of mine and a wonderful talent," Gregori Martin, THE BAY's executive producer/creator, tells Soaps In Depth. "He's busy with some other great projects at the moment, and this gave us an opportunity to go in another direction with the character. Sean and Nicolas [Coster, Jack] have a great dynamic. Sean is bringing a lot of humor to the role."

Moss and Kanan aren't the only newcomers sailing into THE BAY this season! Judi Evans (Adrienne, DAYS) will play Katherine, John's wife, and Patrika Darbo (ex-Nancy, DAYS) has been cast as Mickey, who runs Patrick's Roadhouse.

Watch for an exclusive preview of THE BAY featuring interviews with Martin, Mary Beth Evans (Sara; Kayla, DAYS) and Terri Ivens (Orchid; Simone, ALL MY CHILDREN) in the next two issues of In Depth, on sale Monday, April 21, and Monday, April 28. Chapter 12 of THE BAY streams via the Blip and Roku networks and services beginning Thursday, May 1. For more information, visit www.thebaytheseries.com.

Don't mess with THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS star Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki)! The daytime icon has taken to her Facebook page to slam The Globe for a story printed in its April 7 issue, claiming that, in a phone conversation with another soap opera legend, Susan Lucci (Erica, ALL MY CHILDREN), she said that Y&R isn't a great place to work since executive producer Jill Farren Phelps took over! "Sure, over the year, [Susan and I] have run into each other at events," Scott wrote. "That's it. There was no phone call!"

A Martinez, best known to soap fans as Cruz on the NBC sudser SANTA BABARA, somberly shared the passing of his friend and fellow actor, Dane Witherspoon, 56, on Facebook on March 29. Witherspoon was an original cast member of SANTA BARBARA; he played the wrongly-convicted Joe Perkins, the true love of Kelly Capwell (played by Robin Wright). Witherspoon and Wright were married in real-life from 1986-88.

The actor also played Tyler McCandless on the CBS daytime serial CAPITOL. Martinez wrote the following tribute to his pal on Facebook: "Dane passed this morning. People who watched SANTA BARBARA in its earliest days will remember him as Joe Perkins, a character to which he brought a quiet grace and deep, bittersweet sense of soul. He was a singular, standup guy, loved and admired by many. My first thought, upon meeting him in 1984: 'This is the most beautiful man I've ever seen.' That beauty went all the way to his core."
