Cynthia Watros debuts as Y&R's Kelly

CynthiaWatrosYR.jpg

As previously reported, fan favorite Cynthia Watros (Annie, GL) makes her Y&R debut on Friday, November 15. The Emmy-winning actress describes her character, Kelly, as "a grieving mother who lost her son. She's in a support group and meets Billy (Billy Miller)," who's still grappling with the death of his beloved daughter, Delia.

Watros adds that Kelly's a teacher who's taken some time off from her job, hoping to regain some sense of normalcy in her life. At press time, the actress was set to appear in about seven episodes of Y&R (with the potential for more). What would the show have to do to entice her to stay longer? "I told Jill [Farren Phelps, executive producer] that as long as she wants me and we can work around each other's schedules, I'll be happy to be there as much as I can," Watros says with a smile.

Time will tell if Kelly will resemble more of the Annie whom GL viewers first met — the sweet, supportive nurse who caught the eye of Josh — or if she'll be more like the psychotic terror who tried to destroy Reva! "I love playing all kinds of characters," Watros says. "If Kelly turns out to have hidden characteristics, I'd love to explore [them]."

ATWT Hunk Joins DAYS!

MarkCollier.jpg

Soaps In Depth has learned exclusively that Mark Collier (Mike, AS THE WORLD TURNS) has been cast on DAYS OF OUR LIVES in a newly-created role! He's already been on set taping, and is scheduled to air beginning in late December.

We don't have any information on his character yet, except that it's new to the canvas. But he'll have something in common with at least one of his co-stars... Shawn Christian (Daniel) originated the role of ATWT's Mike back in 1994. He played the part until 1997, and Collier took over when the soap decided to bring the character back in 2002!

Grave Matters

AshleyJones.jpg

THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL's Ashley Jones (Bridget) proved that you can go back again when she teamed up with Christian LeBlanc (Michael, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS) for Nickelodeon's Grave Secrets (a feature film based on Annette and Gina Cascone's Deadtime Stories book series), which debuted in early 2012. "I played Christian's wife — it was fun! I had worked with him before on Y&R [as Megan Dennison] years and years ago — I've known him since I was a teenager!" Jones explains of the movie in which a babysitter (Jennifer Stone) shares frightful tales with her young charges. "And Christian produced this, so when he asked me to be a part of it, I said, 'Of course!'"

In the meantime, DEADTIME STORIES, a new Nickelodeon series also based on the books, began airing earlier this month. The episode titled "Little Magic Shop Of Horrors," which airs Thursday, October 31 at 8 p.m. EST, will feature soap opera alumni Charles Shaughnessy (ex-Shane, DAYS OF OUR LIVES) and Eric Roberts (ex-Vance, Y&R). Then at 8:30 p.m., an episode that was made from Grave Secrets will air as the series' finale. "It's super sweet and adorable, but it has enough spooky stuff to keep [young viewers] guessing and wanting more," Jones reveals. "The kids in it were really, really talented. We filmed in a very spooky-looking house in downtown Los Angeles."

Take This Job And...Give It!

A few producers with soap opera backgrounds have put together a pilot for SPIKE airing this weekend! THE HIRING SQUAD, which debuts on Sunday, October 27 at 11 p.m ET, takes viewers behind the scenes at the largest Midwest landscaping company, Christy Webber Landscape. Webber, the founder, is stepping down and she's letting her employees select their new boss! The pilot has soap ties — Jonathan Reiner (who wrote the soap column at TVGuide.com for many years) is executive producer/showrunner; Sarah Smith, a former writer at THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS, is the SQUAD'S senior producer.

"No one seems to listen to the 99% anymore," says Justin Hochberg, SQUAD's executive producer. "Bosses say they do, but they don't. So what if you were put in charge of not only picking your boss but the entire company was? Ten years ago I worked at Microsoft and I got to hire my own boss. Now companies across America are giving 'power to the people' starting with a $30 million landscaping company that let's every employee be in charge of hiring their new boss."

You can watch an advance clip of the show above!

Y&R's Jeanne Cooper Honored By Son

BeyondTheHeavensDVD.jpg

Corbin Bernsen (Father Todd, Y&R), the son of the late Jeanne Cooper (ex-Katherine), has paid tribute to his mother in a film he directed, wrote and stars in — Beyond The Heavens. The movie comes out on DVD today, which is ironically Cooper's birthday.

Beyond The Heavens is a family film that explores issues of faith, religion and science. The story's told through the eyes of Oliver (Nathan Gamble), a very smart 12-year-old living in the shadow of his parents' first son, who went missing years earlier. Bernsen (who plays Oliver's dad) says the film attempts to show that faith has answers that science may not.

"A lot of this movie was inspired by my Mom," Bernsen tells Soaps In Depth. "She was a vessel of truth and there was no B.S. about her." The filmmaker adds that he didn't know two years ago when he was working on this project that Cooper would pass away when she did. He says, however, he had an instinct to create an expression of lessons that he learned from her.

Bernsen was able to show the film to his mother before she died in May. "Her reaction wasn't one I expected," he says. Cooper didn't throw out words like "brilliant" and "genius" like her son thought she might, but rather, he recalls, she simply looked at him with a knowing smile on her face, and nodded. "She knew I 'got it,'" he says. "May she rest in peace with the knowledge that her work, her wisdom and her words, her lessons to a young son live on."

The film's cast includes many familiar faces including Lawrence Pressman (whose late wife was Lanna Saunders, ex-Marie, DAYS), Bruce Davison (X-Men) and Dendrie Taylor, whom veteran B&B fans may recall as Sarah, the mid-wife who helped deliver Amber and Rick's (sadly, stillborn) child back in 1999.

She's Back!

JacquelineMWood.jpg

We broke the news late last night on Twitter (you are following @soapsindepthcbs on Twitter, aren't you?) that Ridge Forrester (soon to be portrayed by ALL MY CHILDREN alum, Thorsten Kaye) isn't the only one returning to THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL in December. Having taken a break from the show last spring to pursue outside projects, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy) is back taping on the soap, and will first re-appear on Thursday, December 12! Since going off contract at B&B, Wood landed a gig as host of the E! travel show PARTY ON, which has since taken her to far-flung party spots all around the world. Suffice to say, it's good to have her home...(though we're not sure B&B's Hope will share that sentiment!)

RonRaines.jpg

His future as ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Carl may be in limbo at the moment, but Ron Raines (Alan, GUIDING LIGHT) has a new gig lined up: he'll be taking over the role of Daddy Warbucks in the Broadway revival of Annie for the final weeks of the musical's production! Tylo Caught Up In Real Life Legal Drama

HunterTylo.jpg

THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL's Hunter Tylo (ex-Taylor) has found herself wrapped up in a rather unusual lawsuit. According to The Wrap, actress Holly Gagnier is being sued by ballet teacher Patricia McCoy for sabotaging a deal she'd made with Tylo.

Gagnier, who had stints in daytime as DAYS OF OUR LIVES' Ivy and ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Cassie, allegedly tried to sabotage a deal that McCoy had made with Tylo to develop and star in a movie based on a book written by McCoy. According to the suit, Gagnier called Tylo's manager and badmouthed McCoy in an attempt to undermine their arrangement.

Sure sounds like a soap opera plot to us!

AMC Star Is B&B's New Ridge!

ThorstenKayeHeadshot.jpg

Well, the inevitable has happened: THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL has announced that they have recast the role of Ridge Forrester! Beginning on Friday, December 13, the legacy character will now be portrayed by soap star Thorsten Kaye.

B&B executive producer and headwriter Bradley Bell is confident the recast will wow viewers. "Thorsten's powerful screen presence and vast range as an actor has intrigued me for years," he says. "The timing was right so I took the opportunity to cast him in the role of Ridge Forrester. I'm confident Thorsten will make this role unique on every level."

Best known to daytime audiences for his role as ALL MY CHILDREN's Zach, Kaye takes over for Ronn Moss, who departed in September of 2012. With AMC currently on hiatus and a return to production still not scheduled, Kaye was able to join B&B, although if AMC does return, Zach's fate will have to be decided.

But Kaye will have his work cut out for him on B&B! It will be very interesting to see how Ridge reacts when he returns from a year in Paris to find Brooke getting ready to marry Bill!

Brooke & Ridge's Son Is Coming Home

RJBrooke.jpg

Children aren't often seen on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL, at least not after any initial paternity or custody scandals have been cleared up, but the soap has recently issued a casting notice for RJ Forrester. However, while they're looking to recast Brooke and Ridge's son, they're not SORAS-ing him into a teenager. Last played by Ridge Perkett, RJ was sent off to a European boarding school, but he'll be around 10 years old when he returns to Los Angeles. And since B&B's casting notice also indicates a start date of the first week of November, the new RJ should be seen on screen somewhere around the same time as his pop when Thorsten Kaye assumes the role of Ridge starting on Friday, December 13. We'll let you know as soon as an actor has been cast and when we can expect to see him on screen!

Has ATWT's Beck Killed Again?

Beck.jpg

When AS THE WORLD TURNS' Noelle Beck (Lily) guest stars on ELEMENTARY on Thursday, October 17, she won't be the murder victim. "I am suspected of murdering my husband," the actress previews, adding with a laugh, "It seems to be what people see me as for some strange reason!"

Having turned out to be the guilty party when she guested on an episode of LAW & ORDER: SVU, could the same happen here? "It's sort of a really interesting episode," Beck promises. "There are a lot of suspects. So you're like, 'Is it this person? Is it that person?' It's got kind of good twists."

The appearance also reunited Beck with an old castmate! "I got to work with Lucy Liu again," she smiles. "We worked together on CASHMERE MAFIA, and she's absolutely one of the sweetest actresses out there." She met new faces as well. "The Broadway actress, Laura Benanti, she's gorgeous," Beck adds. "And she plays my nanny! There's no way I would have hired this beautiful girl to be my nanny! But she was lovely. And I mean, I've had a crush on Aidan Quinn since Legends Of The Fall, so that was fun, working with him. And I got to see some crew members that I've worked with before, so that was great!"

To find out if Holmes and Watson finger Beck's character for the crime, don't miss the episode of ELEMENTARY titled "Poison Pen," premiering Thursday, October 17, at 10:00 pm EST on CBS!

ATWT's Lindstrom Invites You To A Free Screening Of His Movie!

LindstromGotAwayWIt.jpg

You may have heard that Jon Lindstrom (Kevin, GENERAL HOSPITAL; Craig, AS THE WORLD TURNS) directed an acclaimed film about secrets, denial, revenge and murder titled How We Got Away With It. But you may not be aware that you can actually attend a free screening of the movie on Friday, October 18 as part of The Director's Guild Of America's Director's Finder Series!

"Having my first feature selected for the DGA's Director's Finder Series is a great honor, and also a big break," Lindstrom tells Soaps In Depth. "It's really a venue for the Industry and potential distributors to discover a film they might be interested in but had missed during its festival run. This gives them the chance to see your film in a great theater and gauge an audience's true reaction. Wish me luck!"

Lindstrom himself is scheduled to attend the screening on Friday, October 18, at 3:00 pm. The screening will be at the DGA Theater 2 at 7920 Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, CA. Andrews Returns For More Forrester Scoop!

TheaAndrewsBB.jpg

Having appeared in two episodes earlier this month, OMG! INSIDER host Thea Andrews returns to THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL on Wednesday, October 16 and again on Tuesday, November 5th!

"This basically makes me recurring on the show, right?" teases Andrews of her return cameos. "Honestly, it would be my dream to be a recurring character who gets to show up, like, once a week! I want to be [Spencer reporter] Jarrett's sidekick!"

Then again, the primetime TV journalist says she's only cut out to play herself. "Lord knows I'm not Meryl Streep! Dropping in is okay, but if it was anything other than a cameo I think I would be scared out of my mind. That's too much pressure!"

Though Andrews taped her B&B scenes after her OMG! INSIDER workday (which starts at 5:15 a.m.!), she says joining the soap for a few days didn't feel like work. "Everyone is so funny on set," she notes. "They all laugh and joke around and no one takes themselves too seriously. It's really cool."

Besides, the reporter admits she was a bit of a fan girl during her stint at B&B. "I watched B&B in college, so I kept thinking, 'I can't believe I'm on this show that I used to watch when I was supposed to be in class!'"

Is Raines A PERSON OF INTEREST?

RonRaines.jpg

Tune in to the CBS drama PERSON OF INTEREST tomorrow night, Tuesday, October 8, and see GUIDING LIGHT alum Ron Raines (Alan) guest starring as a rather familiar character. "He's very much an Alan Spaulding type," he says of playing Bruce Wellington, a real estate magnate. "He's a very wealthy businessman who is protecting his family -- his grandson in this situation -- and he's ruthless! And I really detest my grandson's father because I think he's in a much lower class than my grandson!"

While Raines doesn't want to give too much away about his role in the episode, titled "Lady Killer," he does tease that "I've done something pretty bad! It becomes clear how I did what I did to keep my grandson safe."

PERSON OF INTEREST airs at 10 p.m. EST on CBS.

ATWT's Dawson Takes The Stage

DawsonPlay.jpg

AS THE WORLD TURNS alum Trent Dawson (Henry) will be starring in a brand new play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Bruce Norris entitled The Pain And The Itch. The subversive satire about the politics of class and race in the Pacific Palisades will be running from Saturday, October 26, through Sunday, December 1, at The Zephyr Theatre in Los Angeles, CA.

Gathering together for Thanksgiving, a seemingly perfect family is thrown into chaos as a couple guests join in — one of whom is Dawson's character, a staunch Republican named Cash!

"The great thing about Bruce Norris' plays is that they deal with both the personal and the political," says the play's director, Jennifer Chambers. "The situations he creates are tense and troubling, but also hilarious and true. He turns our perceptions completely upside down."

The Pain And The Itch will also have discounted preview performances on Thursday, October 24, and Friday, October 25. For tickets and more information, call (323) 960-5774 or visit the Web site.

Could This Sitcom Dad Be Pam's Mr. Right?

DickChristie.jpg

Dick Christie, best known for playing engineer/inventor Ted Lawson on the eighties-era sitcom SMALL WONDER debuts on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL on Wednesday, October 16 as Charlie Webber, a security guard entrusted with protecting the second Hope Diamond when it goes on display in their Beverly Hills boutique!

"He's got a quirky personality," says Christie of his B&B alter ego, whom he likens to know-it-all mailman Cliff Clavin from CHEERS. "He's a blowhard who considers himself to be very cool. He has instant recall of any diamond heist in the last hundred years and will detail it, chapter and verse, whether you want to hear about it or not."

Christie, a long-time acquaintance of B&B executive producer and headwriter Bradley Bell, says the scribe approached him to play the comic role for this short-term story arc. "He said, 'I want to give you the flexibility to use your improv skills with this character. Anything you want to bring to it, go ahead.' I said, 'Really? Are you crazy? Okay!'" says Christie.

And though Charlie considers himself a consummate professional, one person will manage to throw him off his game: Pam! "They have an eye for each other," says Christie. "I think a romance between Pam and Charlie would be a great thing."

As for the campy eighties sitcom about a robotic daughter that brought Christie his biggest claim to fame, he looks back fondly on the show. "I had so much fun doing it. By today's standards, it probably wasn't very good, but it was good enough to connect with the audience for which it was intended, which was seven-to-thirteen-year-olds. They loved it!"
