A Special Sharon Episode

Sharonbrunette.jpg

Taking up with the man who kidnapped her baby, going on the run after being convicted of murder and letting her loved ones think that she's dead are a few of the questionable moves that Sharon's made on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS over the last year or so. So the show has constructed a Sharon-centric episode, set to air Monday, July 4, to remind viewers of what the character's been through. Executive producer/headwriter Maria Arena Bell says that the episode will "shed more light on Sharon and all the factors that caused her to be in this situation, why she's acted the way she has and why she's gone into the pit of [low] self-esteem."

"I'm trying to show why Sharon's in the place that she's in," concurs the convicted murderess' portrayer, Sharon Case. "Everything that's built up to where she is today [will be examined.]"

It's not a coincidence that Y&R has scheduled this episode for a holiday. Late Y&R creator Bill Bell often scheduled stand-alone flashback episodes on holidays because he knew that viewers might skip watching the show on those days in order to spend them with their families. "You don't miss what happens in the series," says Case. "But if you watched that day, you saw a special episode. That's what this episode does. It continues the series a little bit, but mostly it's one of those great holiday episodes. There are so many flashbacks it feels like a classic."

ATWT Star Has Passed Away

Herrera.jpg

The daytime world has lost one of its star villains forever: Anthony Herrera, whose James Stenbeck tortured AS THE WORLD TURNS' Oakdale and Barbara Ryan for 30 years, passed away on Tuesday, June 21. Herrera died at the age of 67 in Buenos Aries, Argentina, where he'd been living since 2005.

In January 1997, Herrera was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma -- a rare and usually fatal cancer. In the course of his treatment, the actor underwent an autologous stem cell transplant and after a relapse, a donor transplant from his brother, the latter of which made medical history. Herrera even testified in The Senate in support of stem cell research. "The fact that I was asked to testify was a great honor," he told Soaps In Depth in 2008, adding that he wasn't the least bit intimidated by making his speech to Congress. "There aren't many people in the world who have had my life experience with cancer. I wasn't intimidated at all." Herrera was in remission for 10 years, and remained an advocate for government support in stem cell research.

A veteran of the stage, film and television, Herrera -- who also had contract roles on LOVING as Dane and THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS as Jack Curtis -- was the president of Poetry Theater, Inc., where actors such as Hume Cronyn, Charles Durning, Tyne Daly, and Willie Nelson have been known to recite verses on the stage. Donations in Herrera's memory can be made to Poetry Theatre, 210 West 70th Street, #808, New York, NY 10023.

The book Herrera wrote about his battle, The Cancer War, is available to download for free at www.thecancerwar.com.

Vet Returns To His Cult TV Series Roots

Thom.jpg

Although soap fans know Thom Christopher as a Daytime Emmy winner who's played the roles of ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Carlo/Mortimer, LOVING's Joe/Dante and GUIDING LIGHT's Dax, the actor is probably most recognized for his 1981 role as The Hawk on the cult television series BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY. This weekend, Christopher will reunite with series stars Gil Gerard and Erin Gray (Nicole, PORT CHARLES) at the Trek Expo at the John Q. Hammons UMAC Arena in Tulsa, OK. "Even during my soap opera fan encounters, fans always asked me about Hawk," he recalls. "BUCK ROGERS was my first TV series, and playing The Hawk was an exotic, creative, challenging role that caught on with the audience in such a short time -- beyond my belief!"

The series only lasted two seasons, but was a smash hit with science-fiction fans. "Everyone thinks that the character I played was on for the entire 37 or 38 episodes. It was only the last 13," says Christopher. "Nobody expected that kind of reaction in just 13 weeks. I attribute it to what the writers did in making him the outsider looking for some place to call home emotionally, physically, as this kind of isolated person. So I think that's what really caught on, and characters like that invariably do."

This weekend will mark the first time in years that Christopher, Gray and Gerard are together again. "The last time was about five years ago in Orlando at The Mega Con Festival," he notes. "It's going to be a nice reunion for us being together again."

Trek Expo, happening this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, is a science fiction convention held annually in Oklahoma. For more information, visit www.trekexpo.net. For more about Christopher, visit www.thomchristopher.info.

In other DAYS casting, TV Guide is also reporting that former MAKE IT OR BREAK IT teen heartthrob Cody Longo will join the soap as Carly's son, Nicholas. Like Penny, Long's visit will be short-lived, since Nicholas' reunion with his mom will serve to usher Chappell off the canvas in the fall.

Breaking News: Miller To Stay!

Miller5.jpg

It seems as if reports of Billy Miller's exit from THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS were premature: Soaps In Depth has learned that the actor -- currently nominated for a Daytime Emmy for his portrayal of Billy -- renegotiated his contract and signed a one-year deal with the soap. "I'm very happy," Y&R headwriter and executive producer Maria Arena Bell confirms to In Depth. "Very happy."

As In Depth told you back in April when the news of Miller's supposed exit first started generating buzz, setsiders were reporting that the actor was still in contract talks with the soap and his exit wasn't necessarily a done deal.

Let us know below: Are you happy to learn that Miller will be sticking around Genoa City?

Meet Michael's New Sister!

Heap.jpg

Earlier this week, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS' Christian Jules LeBlanc (Michael) tweeted "I have a new sister! Ain't she gorgeous!!!" Although the picture LeBlanc posted showed him alongside a young woman blocking her face, Soaps In Depth can now report that daytime newcomer Jessica Heap has been cast in the role of River's daughter.

The Baton Rouge native's previous credits include a lead role alongside former DAYS OF OUR LIVES ingénue Ashley Benson (ex-Abby) in the TV movie Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal -- based on the real-life scandal in which a fed-up coach resigned after dealing with the clique's lewd behavior -- and in the 2010 crime thriller Sinners & Saints, with her new Y&R co-star Sean Patrick Flanery (Sam)!

South African Model Cast On B&B!

Pheto.jpg

Terry Pheto -- a South African actress and model -- has been cast on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL. "Apparently, we're the last to know about these things here at B&B," tweets Adam Gregory (Thomas). "Haha. Welcome to B&B Terry Pheto!"

According to this blogger from Pheto's hometown, the actress will be playing a South African heart surgeon, sharing screen time with Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke), Ronn Moss (Ridge) and Hunter Tylo (Taylor). The South African TV Authority reports that Pheto will begin taping on Monday, June 13... but her scenes won't even hit the screens in her country until 2012!

B&B is an extremely popular soap in South Africa, and Pheto is a bit of a superstar in her native country. Not only has she appeared on numerous magazine covers, but she's a former face of L'Oreal Paris and was the leading lady in the 2006 Oscar-winning best foreign language film, Tsotsi. "This is the opportunity of a lifetime and I look forward to sharing the screen with my soapie heroes Katherine Kelly Lang and Susan Flannery, while sinking my thespian teeth into a challenging role," Pheto told South African reporters earlier this week. After news of her B&B casting was announced in her country, Pheto was bombarded on Twitter with congratulatory messages. "Thanks for the love and support. Much appreciated," she tweeted. "These are exciting times."

A spokesperson for B&B could not confirm Pheto's casting at this time.

Raines Returns To The Stage!

Raines.jpg

If you live in the Washington, D.C., area, there's a hot ticket in town: Follies, the Stephen Sondheim musical, is currently playing at The Kennedy Center, and it's a smash hit! The play stars Broadway veterans Bernadette Peters (Gypsy), Danny Burstein (South Pacific), Jan Maxwell (Lend Me A Tenor), Elaine Paige (Sunset Boulevard)... and GUIDING LIGHT's own Ron Raines (Alan)! "It's just been thrilling to be a part of it," Raines tells Soaps In Depth. "The talent it's brought out is just amazing."

First on Broadway in 1971, Follies follows a group of musical-revue performers reuniting at their former playhouse for one last bash before the crumbling theater's demolition. "It was inspired by two real theaters that were torn down, and parking lots were made in their space," explains Raines, himself a vet of The Great White Way (Chicago, Show Boat). "That's when a lot of the historical preservation [of theaters] started kicking in. But the play was inspired by that kind of action.

"There are no negotiation problems that I know of," she posts. "Just no scripts for the last month. Believe me, I'd love to be working every day!"

Soaps In Depth hears that the reason for the fan favorite's absence from the screen in the coming weeks is a budget issue.
