New Movie Hits Home For GL Star!

GUIDING LIGHT's Tina Sloan (Lillian) has a bit part in the movie of the moment, the Oscar-nominated thriller Black Swan, as a wealthy ballet patroness. But the actress says that her new film, an independent drama titled Happy New Year, hits very close to home. In it, she's Grace, the mother of an injured Marine, Sgt. Cole Lewis (played by Michael Cuomo), who faces the physical and emotional scars left by his time in Iraq while connecting with others at a rundown veterans hospital. "My own son had been in Iraq, so all the fears I'd had for [him] I was able to use in this," Sloan confides. "I'd never done work like this in my life because Cole loses his leg, and he's probably going to lose the other leg..." Sloan is proud to have been a part of this picture and has genuinely high hopes for its success. "It's the kind of movie that could win everything if it gets the right marketing," she enthuses. "It's just brilliantly done."

Fellow GL alum David Wolos-Fonteno (Charles Grant) also stars as Gunny, another injured vet whom Cole befriends in the VA hospital. Happy New Year will make its world premiere at the South By Southwest Film Conference & Festival in Austin, TX, running Friday, March 11, through Saturday, March 19. Another film making its world premiere at the festival is 96 Minutes, a drama about a terrifying carjacking starring Brittany Snow (Susan, GL). For schedules and screening times, visit Check out the trailer for Happy New Year below.

Brown Is Bumped!

When THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL unveiled its new opening credits to the press earlier this month, the image of Sarah Joy Brown (Aggie) was conspicuously missing from the shot that includes her on-screen "relatives" Zack Conroy (Oliver) and Rick Hearst (Whip). Soaps In Depth has now confirmed that the actress is no longer on contract with the show, having officially been moved to "recurring" status. The three-time Emmy winner joined the cast in the fall of 2009, but even the actress admitted last year to In Depth that she didn't feel as if she were being fully utilized. "I definitely feel like just a supporting player, and I'm not used to that," she said.

Y&R's Kate Linder On Stage!

Kate Linder (Esther, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS) is appearing on stage this weekend in a production of The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre in Los Angeles.

Like other productions, this one stars three women: Linder, actress/author Alison Arngrim (LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE) and Diane Amos (aka "The Pine-Sol Lady.") However, unlike other productions, this one is not a stage reading where the women are seated. Linder and the other performers will be moving around in a fully staged production that includes additional cast members.

"I thought it was just a reading when I committed to it," Linder chuckles. "This is a totally different production. I've never seen anything like it."

Fortunately, the thespian is used to memorizing lines quickly thanks to her time in Genoa City. "This is going to make me a better actress. I try to push myself more and this will definitely do that!"

Show times are Friday, February 18 and Saturday, February 19 at 8 PM and Sunday, February 20 at 2 PM.

Proceeds benefit both a safe house for women in Haiti and local charity Peace Over Violence. For tickets, visit

CBS Being Sued Over B&B Scene!

Did the sight of THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL's Zack Conroy (Oliver) in his skivvies, wearing a cowboy hat and serenading Amber with his guitar last November send your heart racing? It certainly did for New York City's famous Naked Cowboy, but for a very different reason: He is suing CBS over the scenes! TMZ is reporting that the Naked Cowboy -- aka street performer Robert John Burck, who has been a fixture in Times Square for years -- is suing the network for trademark infringement, among other things, and asking for $1.5 million in damages. Burck is claiming that not only did the sexy soap scenes violate his trademark, but CBS promoted that clip on their website and YouTube with "Naked Cowboy" attached to it.

His target against CBS isn't the first time that Burck has filed a lawsuit for trademark infringement. In 2008, he reportedly settled a $4 million suit against the Mars candy company for an featuring a blue M&M dressed in "his" outfit on a big screen outside their M&M's World store in Times Square, and last year he filed a suit against his female counterpart, claiming that the "Naked Cowgirl" -- ex-stripper Sandy Kane -- was confusing tourists and devaluing his brand with her vulgar antics.

"We choose to respond with the bare minimum to the plaintiff's naked allegations," a CBS spokesperson told KABC-TV Los Angeles. What do you think, readers? Does this guy have a case, or is he just looking for a quick buck?

Is Ryder Returning?

There's buzz that Wilson Bethel is bringing Ryder back to THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS, and that the actor will be a contract player with the soap. Ryder, as viewers know, is Daisy's brother and he was the "kinder" captor to Lauren and Jana last year. If he is returning to Genoa City, odds are that he'll be involved in the storyline with Daisy's baby. "We don't comment on contracts," says a show rep. But, if it is true, our advice to Jana is to stay away. Stay. Far. Away.

Panettiere Plays Amanda Knox!

GUIDING LIGHT's Hayden Panettiere (Lizzie) has landed a movie that has been ripped right from the headlines! Later this month, she'll be starring in the title role in the Lifetime TV original film Amanda Knox: Murder On Trial In Italy, opposite Marcia Gay Harden as her mother, Edda. This thrilling biopic details the real-life story of the American student who was tried and convicted last year of the brutal stabbing of her British flatmate, Meredith Kercher, in Italy. "I just saw it for the first time -- I loved it! It's beautifully done," Panettiere reveals. "It definitely maintains the balance that I was hoping for of not really knowing whether she was innocent or guilty."

While Panettiere herself couldn't decide whether Knox had committed the crime, she was deeply affected by what the jury and the public did with the information. "[Amanda] was convicted of killing her roommate and sentenced to 26 years in an Italian prison," the actress explains. "The media frenzy that circled this and what they turned this girl into was unbelievable. They took everything about her that was youthful, innocent, and pure and just used it against her."

For more on the film, which airs Monday, February 21, at 9 p.m. EST, check out our interview with Panettiere in the new CBS issue of Soaps In Depth, on sale Monday, February 14!

Rylan Dishes On MY DAD Gig!

On Thursday, February 10, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS' Marcy Rylan (Abby) swings by the CBS hitcom $#*! MY DAD SAYS, and the actress tells Soaps In Depth that her character, Rebecca, is nothing like her Genoa City alter ego. "She's no NAKED HEIRESS," laughs Rylan. "Rebecca is very chaste and very innocent." In the episode, "Lock And Load," Henry (played by series star Jonathan Sadowski) hopes to make a love connection when he runs into his old friend from summer camp, but Rebecca doesn't exactly jump at the offer. "Let's just say that she doesn't believe in sex before marriage."

This particular guest spot was a first for Rylan, and she hopes that it won't be her last! "I've done comedy on film, on stage, and I try to bring a little comedy to daytime whenever I can. But it was my first time ever doing a sitcom," she explains, adding that working on the show turned out to be a real eye-opening experience. "Soap actors have the ability to learn lines really fast. We get cuts and changes in the morning, and move at a crazy fast pace. But I have to say... I didn't realize how fast sitcom artists get their new lines and have to turn them around!" she marvels. "They film a scene, and then producers and writers walk up to the actors [right on set] and cut jokes and add new ones. Then the actors have about five seconds to digest the new lines that they've never heard before and they turn around and do the scene again in front of a live studio audience! It was an amazing learning experience."

Tune in to $#*! MY DAD SAYS on CBS tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m. EST.

Wagner Visits CLEVELAND Tonight!

He's not a doctor, but he'll be playing one on TV! Jack Wagner (Nick, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL) is making a guest appearance on TV LAND's hit comedy HOT IN CLEVELAND tonight, and Soaps In Depth has a sneak peek!

In the hilarious episode called "Sisterhood Of The Traveling SPANX®," a pair of the magical body shapers enter the ladies' lives, and leads them all on unexpected adventures. Wagner will play a hunky physician named Aaron, who catches the eye of series star Valerie Bertinelli's Melanie. "It's a cute show, and it's fun to do a sitcom," Wagner tells In Depth. "I had a long talk with Betty White (ex-Ann; CLEVELAND's Elka), so I got to reconnect with her. She's fantastic. It's a really great group over there, and it's fun to do a sitcom."

B&B Sweetheart Takes A Nasty Turn!

She may play a naïve teenager on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL, but when Kim Matula (Hope) guest stars on THE DEFENDERS Friday night, viewers will see the young actress in a very different light! "I basically play a hooker!" Matula tells Soaps In Depth with a laugh. "It's the polar opposite of Hope! I play a character named Mia -- or Ashley, depending on how you want to look at it. She goes by a few names!"

In the episode titled "Nevada v. Doug The Mule," when a young college student is pulled over in a car carrying 30 bricks of cocaine, Nick (played by Jim Belushi) and Pete (Jerry O'Connell) try to prove that their client was set up by a girl he met on Spring Break. Enter Matula's character. "She works for a drug cartel in Baja, Mexico, and she gets innocent little boys on vacation to fall in love with her, then drive her car back to the States. But little do they know that the car is full of drugs," she explains. When Nick and Pete track down Mia in Mexico to get her to testify on behalf of their client, "Nick poses as a weakling guy that I'm supposed to seduce, so I got to actually make out with Jim Belushi!"

Taping the CBS drama nearly conflicted with her B&B schedule, but thanks to a little magic at the hands of the soap's executive producer and headwriter Bradley Bell, Matula was able to make the primetime spot work. "Brad Bell and Jim Belushi are really good friends, so I think when Brad heard that I had the opportunity to do the show, he said, 'We'll write you out of the episode. Don't worry about it.' So it worked out really well!"

Matula's episode of THE DEFENDERS will air on Friday, February 11, at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.

Bell Launches New Web Series!

Lauralee Bell (Christine) doesn't have a lot of time to relax these days. Not only has the actress been popping up more and more on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS as her alter ego spearheads several investigations (including Genoa City cop corruption and Skye's "death"), but Bell continues to explore the Internet as a platform that melds entertainment and business. Her latest project is JUST OFF RODEO, a four-minute web comedy series, which allows viewers to actually purchase the fashions worn or products used by the characters.

"This is one of those [projects] that has been in my brain way too long!" she laughs, noting that when she finally launched it, she received an email from her brother, William J. Bell, president of Bell-Phillip Television, reminding her of that fact. "Bill said, 'I remember sitting on the couch with you 10 years ago, and you talking about this!'" she shares. "Back then, it was so far out of the norm, but now people are used to buying clothes on the Internet."

ATWT Wins Writing Award!

AS THE WORLD TURNS may have gone to that great soap in the sky, but the beloved drama is still winning awards! The show's scribes took home the Writers Guild of America award for Daytime Drama at the WGA Awards on Saturday, February 5. Joint ceremonies were held in Hollywood and New York.

The soap sent in three scripts to the judges: two focused on Reid's death and Chris realizing he had the late doctor's heart; the finale was also submitted. "Jean Passanante, our headwriter, wrote the breakdown for the finale," says former ATWT writer David A. Levinson, who accepted the show's award in Hollywood. "It had an 'Our Town' feel to it. Once she knew that I was the one who'd be writing the script, we went to see a production of Our Town. We talked about the 'feel' of the play and how that could transcend into the script.

"We felt that Bob's retirement was the perfect way to go out," continues Levinson. And the soap's ending was a well-planned and thoughtfully-considered phrase, explains the scribe. "To have the last words on the show be him saying, 'Good night' [was] because [the late] Helen Wagner (Nancy) opened the show with 'Good morning.'"

Miller Moves To Primetime!

THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS' Billy Miller (Billy) is moonlighting on the Season 2 premiere of JUSTIFIED! In an episode titled "The Moonshine War," Miller plays a sexual predator -- a departure from his regular gig on Y&R, but a role that harkens back to his bad-boy days as Richie on ALL MY CHILDREN. Look for Miller's character to be pursued on-screen by U.S. Deputy Marshal Raylan Givens, played by series star Timothy Olyphant.

"Y&R was great about working with my schedule so I could do this," Miller tells Soaps In Depth, adding that he had concerns about his scene's subject matter when it came to one particular co-star. "I wanted to make sure the little girl I worked with felt comfortable [with the material], but she was great. A real pro."

The soap's executive producer and headwriter, Maria Arena Bell, says that coordinating schedules to allow Y&R's actors to do the occasional guest spot is a win-win for both sides. "We try to make it work," reports Bell.
